Television is reaching at the peak of popularity
Television is no more “Chota Parda”; with coming of many satellites channels television industry has seen a boom in popularity. Now you have so many channels offering different programs at your click throughout the day from Kids’ cartoon network to saas bahu’s serials to youth oriented reality shows it has satiated everybody. Last 10 years have been the story of success and TV stars are equal with film stars in popularity that even superstars like ShahRukh Khan and Salman Khan are doing television shows.
Mahabharata and Ramayana were huge hit in their times that people found streets empty at the airing time of these shows. Then “Chitrahaar”, “Humlog”, “Nukad”, “Shrimaan Shrimati Ji” came and these all were family oriented programs. But when “Kyunki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi” started in 2000 it completely changed the definition of television industry and established the brand Balaji Telefilms. Although this serial has been criticized time to time for showing all scheming, adultery etc. but remember that it is the first show in which a character called Mihir dies and creative were to reincarnate it on the demands of audiences. It became the highest TRP’s show that other channels also started Saas-bahu’s serials and now all channels are saturated with this Saas-bahu’s drama. Whether you like it or not still many people including educated men and women watch them so you can’t say that only illiterate housewives like them. And why not people should see them they are just entertaining us? So use your own brain what is right or wrong and simply enjoy them.
Apart from these daily soaps reality shows are also making their way, trend started with Indian Idol and Nach Baliye but popularity ascended with “BIGG BOSS” which is a copy of UK’s Big Brother. A show in which 13-14 celebrities locked in a house cut from outside world, no contact to family, friend or to any outsider, without your cell, newspaper, TV, radio under the eye of cameras all over. First season of Big Boss was aired in 2006 which was hugely popular. The show was won by an actor Rahul Roy but Rakhi Sawant came out true winner in the form of entertainment. This particular show set Rakhi on the peak of her career now. First season was full of scheming and politics while second one which is being aired now is famous for its obscenity. Big Boss 2 is daily in news for all wrong reasons. It is totally different what we have seen in Big Boss 1.
The show started with 14 celebrities including Jade Goody, remember a housemate of Shilpa Shetty in UK’s Big Brother where she used racist remarks about Shilpa, later scarified by British media but Shilpa was beneficial through these remarks as her sinking career uplifted and she also won this show, unfortunately Jade left the Big Boss’s house due to cervical cancer in 2 days. However, other 13 contestants came for popularity, winning the show and some of them for image makeover especially Rahul Mahajan, Raja Chaudhary, Payal Rohatagi and Monica Bedi but what sort of images they are projecting are better what they had outside the show.
Rahul has proved himself Casanova showing himself a peppy boy but he is truly a politician, flirting with Monica despite having Payal as his girlfriend. Romance angle between Aryan and Anupana was also there in Big Boss 1 which was acceptable but what Rahul is doing, kissing on cameras dancing cheaply and his body language is also lewd. On the other hand Payal is wearing bikini, intimating with Rahul and having massage just for the cameras. She herself candidly admits several times if she does that her producers and fans like this and she will get more films offers. Wearing bikini is no big deal Kashmira also wore but saying that audience wants to see it is such a nonsense. Abusive language is more spoken than normal language every single dialogue has voice of “Beeps”. Raja and Sambhavna is the worst user of it one day they abuse each other and the second day they dance so closely. What a perplexity for audience to decide what are they in real?
Huge obscenity is new Mantra for Big Boss 2 and to justify their show organizers are giving the reason “To change your channel if you don’t want to see it”. This is ridiculous if somebody likes the concept of reality show he will see but that doesn’t mean he is accepting lewdness. There should be rules and regulations to follow strictly. As of now a case has been registered against “Big Boss” and its participants Payal, Rahul and Sambhavna for obscenity. So they will now realize what sort of image they made on national television.
India is family oriented country. Family sits and watches shows together whether it is reality or daily shows. Obscenity is increasing on television more than films. So don’t promote filthiness and foul language and censorship must be there to regulate such shows.
